Why do butterflies have ‘eyes’ on their wings?

(Scientists have proposed many different evolutionary explanations)

Startle Hypothesis!

Eyespots can mimic predator eyes!

One explanation is that eyespots work by startling predators!

Many butterflies rest with their wings closed. When a predator approaches, they suddenly OPEN their wings, revealing large, eye-like patterns.

This rapid  change can trigger hesitation or fear, especially in birds that are highly sensitive to eye-like shapes!

...even a brief pause can be enough for the butterfly to escape!

The Deflection Hypothesis!

Another theory suggests that eyespots act as decoys!

Instead of scaring predators away, they redirect the attack! Eyespots are typically positioned near the edges of the wings, far away from vital body parts like the head & abdomen.

(Some species even reinforce this illusion by adding tail-like extensions, creating what looks like a “false head” at the wing edge)

Conspicuousness and Intimidation

More recent research suggests that eyespots may not need to resemble eyes at all. What seems to matter is how visually striking they are!

Large, high-contrast patterns can overwhelm a predator’s visual system, especially when they appear suddenly.

Sexual Selection

Eyespots might not just help butterflies survive, they may also help them find a mate!

In some species, butterflies have a bright ultra-violet signal at the center of the eyespot that is attractive to potential partners! These UV spots can act as a signal that the butterfly is healthy and well-developed.

Evolution is balancing two things at once: staying alive, and being chosen.

No single answer!

There is no single explanation for why eyespots exist. Their function can vary depending on the species, the type of predator, and the environment in which the butterfly lives.

In some contexts, they may startle. In others, they may deflect attacks or signal to mates.

Evolution does not settle on one solution! It builds traits that can work across multiple scenarios.

Eyespots are a perfect example of this layered functionality!
